CABINET Hidden Gem for October/November, 2007LANDYMOREKEITH CONTEMPORARY ARTIf you're in the market for some contemporary art, check out the LandymoreKeith Contemporary Art gallery on Dundas Street west. Created with the intention of connecting collectors with new and undiscovered talent, this gallery achieves just that, all in a comfortable, welcoming setting. This month you can check out the works of up and coming artist Sarah Rooney from October 26th - November 26th. Her grand opening, open to all art buffs, collectors and decorators, is on October 26th from 6pm - 9pm. LANDYMOREKEITH Hidden Gem for September, 2007MINISTRY OF THE INTERIORJust north of Queen Street West, in the midst of some great art galleries, is the hottest new design store/gallery on the up and coming Ossington strip. In the 2000 sq.ft. converted autobody shop with the bright yellow front, you'll find unique decorative objects, lamps, wallpapers, bedding, kitchen stuff and even cool Marimekko bags to bring it all home with. Jason MacIssac, a former film and video art director, has opened his new space with a real coo. Until Sept. 15th, there's an exhibit called "Everything's Amiss" of furniture pieces by designer Jason Miller, who was named "Best Breakthrough Designer" by Wallpaper magazine. Check out his brightly coloured "I Was Here" tables that are covered with graffiti he photographed around New York. If you miss this show, MacIssac promises there will be new cutting edge ones to come. Just don't miss this store if you're looking for something no one else has! MINISTRY OF THE INTERIOR Hidden Gem for August, 2007QUEEN WEST ANTIQUE CENTREAlthough located in a strip of traditional antique shops, this store is anything but! Once you climb a few broad steps and enter the wide double storefront, you're in Mid Century heaven. NOT the, way too common, plethora of off shore reproductions - but, great, original examples of the REAL thing. You might find Eames bucket chairs with wrought iron Eiffel tower bases and their original 1957 production labels intact. A set of Herman Miller office furniture could be next to a lovely example of a Danish Modern teak buffet and table with fabulous Thonet chairs. If you can't find what you're looking for, ask the owner Mike to keep an eye out for it on one of his cross-country searches. So, whether you're looking for a Knoll coffee table or vintage trophies, this should be your first stop. QUEEN WEST ANTIQUE CENTRE Hidden Gem for June/July, 2007RESIDENTIAL LIGHTINGDon't be fooled by the unassuming double storefront. Residential Lighting is the place to find real period lighting. Whether it's Turn of the Century, Deco or Mid Century, ceiling, table or floor lamps, you'll find it here or they'll find it for you! Helen Weber and Tony DeBortoli have run this family owned business since 1988 and they're as genuine as all their unique pieces. Equally as valuable, they will rewire, repair or reinvent anything you bring to them. And as far as bulbs and shades, there's a large selection. But, if you can't find exactly what you're looking for, they will custom build any kind of shade just for you. This gem maybe hidden, but it has true sparkle. QUEEN WEST ANTIQUE CENTRE |
