Bathroom Vanity & Sink
is a loft style sink a good idea?
August 10, 2009
Our bathroom vanity is 36 inches inclusive of the counter top. I would like to install a “loft” style sink which will come up about 2.5 inches above the counter. Adults are the primary users of the bathroom. Would this be alright, or a complete design mistake? Thanks.
Laura M. Stein responds...
36 inches is a bit higher than standard for a bathroom vanity (32-34 inches is the norm. 36 inches is standard for a kitchen counter). Adding a vessel sink would make your vanity even higher. If this is a primary bathroom used daily for washing your face, shaving and brushing teeth it might feel a bit awkward and uncomfortable having the sink so high, especially if the adult users are on the shorter side.
If it’s a powder room used only occasionally for hand washing it should be fine. Remember, the bottom of an ordinary sink is several inches below the counter. Since a vessel sink is only partially sunken or sits on top of the counter, the base is much higher and you have to hold your hands higher up to wash them. One solution might be to lower your vanity by two inches. If there are legs or a base that can be cut down your contractor could do this for you.
