Hardwood Flooring
Mixing Woods
December 18, 2008
we currently have light stained oak kitchen cabinets, oak fire place surround (family room) and oak railings in staircase and down upper open hall. Living room & Dining room are separated by ceramic tile to the staircase. We are thinking of installing maple flooring (Darker stain) and I am concerned it will clash with the railing if I install it at staircase and hall. What is your thoughts about mixing the two….and if you think Not….we would prefer a darker oak floor..or is this also a poor choice…. the maple solid flooring is a great deal $2.99 per sq ft about 1200 required.

Maple wood has a tighter veining and a softer look than oak, which is more bold and shows more character. Mixing both could be challenging if you don’t harmonize the colour of the tiles, walls and especially other wooden furniture pieces in the same space, or that are visible from it. If you really want to go with the dark Maple floors throughout the staircase, consider painting the railings white matching all trims, baseboards and moldings and even the fireplace surround.
