Marble or Granite?

Leeza from Saanich asks...

What is the best type of stone to use on the floor and walls of an enclosed shower? Marble or granite?

Laura M. Stein responds...

Either marble or granite work well in a shower. Granite is less porous than marble. Tumbled marble is very porous and may be harder to clean soap scum out of, but polished or honed marble are easy to maintain. If you have a steam shower, where the door goes right to the ceiling and the space is completely enclosed, the steam cannot escape and creates extra pressure on the walls. In this case, you should use porcelain tiles on the walls.
