Tropical Elegance

Explore this month's beautiful redesign - Designed by Sharyn Kastelic – Primed by Design Inc.

The owners of this 7 year old home, wanted to finally furnish their empty rooms (living, dining, office), replace the tired family room furniture, upgrade the lighting and redo the powder room. They favoured an elegant traditional style with a warm, airy tropical feel. It was important to maximize seating for entertaining, and to incorporate a (very big) grand piano. And it all had to be kid and pet-friendly!

Sharyn's inspiration for the colour scheme came from an existing wool area carpet with black, coral, green and sandy beige – the perfect tropical palette! Traditional British colonial style furnishings in dark wood with solid fabrics are the basis for the scheme. The tropical theme was introduced through wallpaper, art and accessories so the décor can be easily changed later. Because of the semi-open floor plan, the colours and finishes are repeated throughout for consistency and flow. The biggest challenge was to make the space feel warm and comfortable, despite the ten foot ceilings!

Numerous plans and elevations were drafted to consider various options. One option was to remove the wall between the family room and living room, but in the end the clients opted to keep the existing walls and approved this furniture layout.

Instant drama was created with a black wool, patterned stair runner and coordinating area rug. A glass-top, copper "flamingo" table adds a touch of whimsy and sets the theme.

A tall silk flower arrangement complements the colours of the table and carpet. A custom hall seat with mirror, coat hooks and storage (partially shown) provides seating. Crema Marfil marble shelf tops provide a durable surface and a touch of luxe.

The arched picture niche on the left was previously open to the living room. It was closed in to screen the view and allow for the installation of wall sconces. Existing columns provide a dramatic entrance to the dining room while the wallpaper provides instant tropical flair, warmth, texture, colour, and pattern. With extensions, the table can seat ten people comfortably.

Recessed lights and wall sconces were added to a room devoid of architectural lighting. An existing two-way fireplace was enhanced with a slim custom mantle and marble surround. Silk plaid draperies and comfy high-back "concert seating" add colour.

This room had to perform double-duty for entertaining and daily use, so seating was maximized and features machine-washable, slip covers. Shutters and semi-sheer draperies filter the western sun. A fan-light (not shown) helps to bring the ceiling down. A row of recessed lights was added to highlight the draperies and balance the existing niche lighting.

The marble fireplace surround, sand-coloured wall paint, seating and wool sisal area carpet were kept neutral to enlarge the space and promote a calm relaxed feeling.

The textured wallpaper features a raised scroll design made of actual sand particles. The toilet was replaced with a sleek one-piece model and recessed lighting was added.

The pedestal sink was replaced with a custom cabinet (for storage), topped with crema marfil marble and oval undermount sink. Wall to wall mirror helps expand the space.

Panel moulding breaks up the walls and replicates a trim detail on the new office furniture. Dropped crown moulding and a hanging light fixture (not shown) visually lower the ceiling.
